School Bus Route Delays

As you know, our bus service contractor, First Student, is experiencing a driver shortage which has had a ripple effect on student transportation services. Middle school bus routes in particular are impacted for the following reasons:

  • The bus driver shortage has required that we combine some bus routes.
  • Drivers complete elementary school routes and then drive the middle school routes.
  • Middle school buses are delayed due to the elementary routes running late. Reasons for the long delays  include the length of some combined routes and students not waiting at the correct morning stop which takes more time.

To keep you informed, we began utilizing our auto-dial message system last Friday in an effort to let parents and guardians know if buses were more than 20 minutes late for after school pick up.

If your student rides the bus to or from school and you have NOT been receiving afterschool phone notifications about delays, please REGISTER your child as a bus rider at the following link:

Due to the many variables on bus routes, we are not able to predict what time buses will arrive at their planned stops so the voicemail message has limited detail. When after school bus pick-up time are delayed, students are supervised by school staff as they wait for the bus to arrive.

First Student will be reevaluating bus routes on the second full week of school (the week of September 17) to determine if new drivers are available for assignments or if routes should be changed. We know this is a challenging inconvenience and we are working diligently with First Student to limit the impact on families.
