Weekly Communication – April 3

Distance Learning Starts Monday, April 6

We recognize that the transition to Distance Education for All is a big one. We are implementing an educational model that is new for most staff and families. We are bringing your student’s education into your home and families are important partners in this shift. Our staff is doing all they can to develop systems and structures to support your student and you during this unparalleled challenge in our community, nation, and world.

Most importantly, we want you and your student to know that we are committed to being flexible and to work with whatever barriers arise as we begin this new way of teaching and learning.

As we transform the way teaching and learning occur in Corvallis, it is important to keep in mind that maintaining care and connection comes first.

**Teachers will offer 1 hour/day of student connection/office hour time. Teachers have flexibility in setting this time and also the format. It could be a time for an open Google meet, 1-1 connection, or small group chats.
Please know that instructional days may be added to account for the March 16-20 school cancellation.

March Dine-Outs

We plan to follow a rolling block, odd/even schedule, which can be found here.

  • Monday, April 6, will be an Even Day
  • This odd/even schedule will follow the high school pattern.
  • Instructional days may be added to account for the March 16 – 20 cancellation days.

Grading

Superintendent Ryan Noss and Assistant Superintendent Melissa Harder have determined that students will receive a Pass/No Pass for 3rd quarter and grading will move to a Pass/No Pass system for the remainder of the year.

We will not be weighting grades (ie. 80/20, 70/30) as a result, all grades will be entered into the same category. A “pass” will be 60% and above and a “no pass” will be 59% and below. We will not be grading on participation during live events.

Independent Study Time

The 30 minutes of instructional time represents a daily maximum per period and there is not an expectation that all teachers utilize all 30 minutes for direct instruction.

  • Students may also be provided up to 20 minutes of independent study per class period/day related to the course.
  • Students will not be expected to turn in work prior to the week of April 13 and late work will be accepted if needed.

Google Classroom Codes

Most students are already connected to their class through Google Classroom. Students and families were sent newly created Google Classroom codes as teachers move into distance learning. Please share these with your students so they can connect to their classes.

Schedule Flexibility/Communication

Schedule Flexibility – Recorded Lectures

We understand that some students may have to care for family members, be ill themselves, or may not have access to a device at all times during the day. Because we cannot expect that all students and families are able to follow a district set schedule, teachers who plan to offer live teaching through Google Meet will record, provide notes, or both during their lectures/discussions so that they are available to students who are not able to attend at designated times. These notes and/or recordings will be posted to the Google Classroom.

Communication

The Student Connect time in the above schedule is designed for students and teachers to connect. As a parent/guardian if you wish to connect with a staff member then please use e-mail.

If you cannot get a hold of a staff member through email please call Julie Mitchell, Office Manager, at 541-757-3973 and leave a detailed message including your name, staff member name you are trying to contact, and any information you want included. Julie will forward the information to the appropriate staff member.

We look forward to starting this new adventure with you and your student.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work through all the details to get this up and running.
